WHAT ARE AAMI LEVELS?
What is AAMI?
The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) is a U.S. organisation that works toward increasing awareness of the correct use of Medical Instrumentation. AAMI is responsible for establishing the global standards for proper usage of Medical Instruments.
Four-step barrier performance is amongst these standards laid for protective clothing, surgical drapes, gowns, etc. These standards are the unified standards to ensure the quality of the product made out of non-woven fabrics.
Understanding AAMI Levels
The AAMI Standard (ANSI/AAMI PB70:2012) outlines criteria for the liquid barrier performance in the critical zones of gowns, drapes, or any other protective clothing that is likely to be in direct contact with infection-causing elements such as blood, bodily fluid, etc.
LEVEL 1
Indicates minimal fluid barrier protection. It is ideal for very short surgeries or everyday patient care where the risk of fluid exposure is close to none.
LEVEL 2
Indicates minimal to low fluid barrier protection. Equipment made from this fabric is used in slightly longer surgeries like Endoscopic or Hernia.
LEVEL 3
Provides moderate fluid barrier protection. It is used in surgeries with moderate risk of fluid exposure and hence used in most of the surgeries.
LEVEL 4
It has the highest barrier protection against fluids and bloodborne pathogens in critical areas of the medical protective clothing and is ideal for longer surgeries.
